Why the Avatar: The Last Airbender Magic Set is Great

Last weekend I attended the Avatar: The Last Airbender prerelease. I had a lot of fun. I went 2-1 and opened a Badgermole Cub which is one of the best pulls. The format is a lot of fun. The bending mechanics are great. I built a red black firebending deck that let me make mana during combat to use on instants and abilities. One standout card for me was Lo and Li. She allowed me to tutor a lesson or noble. I tutored for Zuko and I would have a 4/3 lifelink creature. Also my firebending lessons gained lifelink when I used my removal.

Avatar is full of great commander cards. Here is a list of cards I suggest you pick up.

1. Planetarium of Wang Shi Tong

   This is a great card that allows you to cheat in the top card of your library once per turn when you scry or surveil. It helped me win games in prerelease. Remember even if you don't scry anything good you can put them on the bottom and see if the next card is something you want.

2. Wang Shi Tong

   This card draws cards and punishes your opponent for searching their library by drawing you a card. The X cost makes it a great mana outlet and a wincon. You can draw your deck and make a huge flyer.

3. Avatar Aang

   Aang has 4 cards in the main set. His 5 colour card wants you to play all the bending styles to flip him. Combo the back side with fist of suns to cast any spell for free. Use moonmist to flip him for 1G. Great commander for Allies.

4. Badgermole Cub

   This card is making waves in standard and modern. It supercharges your mana dorks, adding an additional G mana when you tap them. It also Earthbends 1 on entering giving you a mana producing creature. This card is over $100 at the moment but if you pull it count yourself lucky.

5. Rise of Sozin

   This boardwipe on an enchantment flips into a reanimator card. I didn't get to flip it in prerelease but it is quite powerful.

6. Firebending Student

   An explosive card enabling turn 3 wins in standard. This card has firebending X where X is it's power. It also has prowess, allowing it to make a lot of mana.

7. Azula

   Azula copies your spells cast during combat. She provides great value by copying your combat tricks and removal.

8. Redirect Lightning

   This card is similar to deflecting swat which is a great red commander spell. It's not free but it's pretty close to this iconic card.

9. The Great Henge

   Avatar has some good reprints. This is a good mana rock and also a good card for counter synergies.

10. Teferi's Protection

    The best protection spell in commander has seen a reprint in Avatar. Pick it up while it's cheaper in price as it's bound to go back up.

These are just some of the great cards in Avatar. Try limited if you are interested and pick up cards if any seem suitable for your decks. I hope you enjoy the set as much as I did.
