Why I love Magic the Gathering
A great way to meet friends and enjoy yourself
My name is David and I am passionate about Magic the Gathering. I hope to share some of the enjoyment I have had from this game in this weekly newsletter. Today we will examine why I love the game.
Magic the gathering is a great hobby for having fun and meeting new friends. Granted it can be expensive but you can enter an event where you get to keep cards for around $28. This is called a draft where you build your own deck on the spot.
I have also dabbled in the financial side of the game where people buy and sell to make a profit. I have made as much as $80 in one transaction. Whether you are interested in the game from a financial side as a collector or as a player, there is a lot for you to explore.
One of the most popular formats, or ways to play the game, is called Commander. This is a 100 card Singleton format, with only one of each card except basic lands. You have a legendary creature as your Commander and your deck is built in that creature's colours. I have over 15 decks, which is more than I can use regularly but I am always willing to share and donate. I built a deck for my mother and we regularly play. Even though she is a senior she still has fun playing with me. I enjoy the time we spend together playing.
If you want to build your own commander deck, I recommend going to a shop and asking players if they have any extra cards they are willing to give. Some shops also sell packs of around 20 rares for $10. You can pick a legendary creature card and build your deck from there. You can buy singles online for less than a dollar to a few dollars. Some cards can cost over $10 but I would avoid expensive cards as a beginner. Set a budget and stick to it. Alternatively you can buy premade decks at the store for $30 to $50.
When going to a Local Game Store for the first time, I recommend finding some players looking for a game. Introduce yourself and tell them you are new and want to learn. They should be friendly and help you out. You can speak to a store owner and get some information. They give out starter boosters with preset cards for new players.
Another way to learn is to download the free online platform Magic Arena. You can download it on Steam. You will play a tutorial which teaches you the game. It is possible to spend money to buy Gems the in game currency to buy packs, cosmetics and other items but it is also possible to pay for free. You get wildcards to craft new cards.
Once you have learned the basics, you can attend Commander nights. These are free events usually on Friday nights at your local game store. As stated before find some players and play a game. You will make some mistakes but learn from them and have fun.
In conclusion I love this game because it is a great hobby. You meet new friends, collect cards and maybe make a little extra cash from selling cards. I recommend you go to new events such as tournaments and conventions once you get familiar with the game. Don't be afraid to lose and learn from yourself and others. People are friendly in the community and willing to help out. I love this game for the countless hours of entertainment it has given me. I have also made several new friends from the game and met many new people. I have been able to make a little extra cash which admittedly has mostly gone back into the game. Although I have spent a lot on this hobby it is probably my longest lasting one and has given me a lot of pleasure. I hope you can find some of that enjoyment from the game as well.
