Investing in Magic the Gathering
A way to reinvest into your hobby or make a little extra cash
Hello my name is David. I have started writing a Magic the Gathering newsletter. Today we will be discussing investing in the game. I'm not talking about buying shares in Hasbro but using collectibles as a part of your portfolio.
Magic the Gathering is a great hobby. It's also a way to make a little extra cash on the side. If you can buy product for cheap and hold it a few years you can make a moderate 10% to 20% profit. I have found affordable boxes on sales. I've traded for products and I've also found good deals on Facebook marketplace. I was able to buy cheap dual lands and resell them for a $80 profit.
If you draft or open cards you might find valuable cards once in a while. You can sell them to stores for cash or credit, but they only give you 50% cash or 65% credit. While this is low it is a quick way to unload cards.
Another alternative is to sell products on Facebook marketplace or join MTG groups on Facebook. Usually the going rate is 75% to 80%. You need to make more effort to make a sale and meet up but you can make more money.
Another way to make money is to speculate on cards that you think will go up in price. One example was during the release of Kamigawa Neon Dynasty. I knew shrines would be reprinted so I bought 15 Sanctum of All for $1 each and sold them for $4 each. I made $45 Dollars by selling to the same store I bought them from. Niche tribes sometimes get a new commander printed for them and see a resurgence in price of popular cards for their tribes. One recent example is the Eldrazi. A deck was printed for them in Commander Masters and cards Iike Void Winnower and Emrakul the Promised End saw hikes in price. Identifying niche tribes with new support and buying key cards is a good way to profit on new tribal support and speculate on cards.
Buying sealed products is another way to make money. This usually entails holding product for 3-5 years and selling products that appreciate. You can always draft boxes that don't sell but be prepared for this outcome. Another product you can hold are secret lairs. Some like the Kitty SLD have seen large increases in price. Go for secret lairs that have cards of high value. If you buy bundles you can sometimes save on shipping but if you live abroad be prepared for the exchange rate.
I hope this advice helps you in your journey if you ever decide to invest in Magic. You won't necessarily make a living but you can make a little extra money to reinvest in your collection or save for something else. I want to thank everyone who is reading my newsletter as I appreciate everyone. I hope to reach out to you again soon.
Keep having fun with Magic the Gathering,
David
